Psychotherapy

‘The individual, and not the problem, is the focus. The aim is not to solve one particular problem, but to assist the individual to grow, so that they can cope with the present problem and with later problems in a better and integrated fashion.’

Counselling & Psychotherapy, Carl Rogers. Boston Houghton Mifflin Co. 1942

My services are provided within the IAHIP Code of Ethics and Practice

I offer open ended psychotherapy. It might take a little while or a long time and this depends very much on what it is you are looking for. The longer term work will inevitably go deeper into understanding what the issues are and might involve an exploration of the past, references to the present and some thoughts about your future. Shorter term work is more likely to be focused on issues current in your life.

My intention is to offer you a safe and confidential space where you have the opportunity to talk about the things that matter to you. When we first meet there will be an opportunity to explore what it is you want  from psychotherapy or counselling and what counselling offers. That will enable us to decide to continue or not.

I work  with individuals or couples who experience chronic emotional, psychological, and/or relational distress. Emotional well-being depends on having satisfying mutual relationships with others whilst distress is often rooted in our formative relational experience that creates destructive or inappropriate/circular/abusive patterns of relationships in adult life.

Through the developing therapeutic relationship it is possible to engage in relationships that are mutually enriching, supportive and sustained.

The sessions last 50 minutes and would normally be weekly, and this will be agreed in the form of a contract.

You are entitled to end counselling at any time without having to give a reason.

I have no hard and fast rules about  who should attend for psychotherapy or counselling and I would invite you to attend if you  feel that it might be right for you.  Although specific problems are important, I try not to lose sight of the person as a whole.
